TORONTO — More than 13,000 elementary and high school students took part in the Toronto Raptors’ Read to Achieve Open Court practice at Air Canada Centre today. As the Raptors jumped and dunked their way into the hearts of their young fans, they had one thing on their mind: promoting literacy and on-line reading.
With the support of Rubicon Publishing, the Raptors players talked to their fans about the importance of reading and how it had benefited them in their own lives. Several of Rubicon’s award-winning series such as BOLDPRINT, The 10 and Timeline were on display as part of the event.
“Rubicon’s books are exciting, accessible and cover topics kids really enjoy reading about,” said Sandra Farfan, Raptors Community Relations Co-Ordinator. “The books also have great built-in literacy supports for students, so they’re perfect for helping us engage kids in reading.”
During the event, 14 lucky students from Mississauga’s Bishop Scalabrini School were invited on the court for a jersey and book exchange with the players. Each student received a copy of the BOLDPRINT title Above the Rim, a Raptors Jersey and a Read to Achieve T-shirt.
Based on the crowds of enthusiastic and energized young fans, the event was a big win for the Raptors, and more importantly, for literacy.
