RUBICON AUTHOR JOAN GREEN INSPIRES WITH SPEECH ON EDUCATION AT THE EMPIRE CLUB
November 13, 2008
TORONTO — Joan Green, a Rubicon author and Series Editor of the award-winning BOLDPRINT, gave an inspiring speech at the Empire Club today entitled “Greater Accountability and Better Quality in Ontario Schools”.
As the newly appointed co-chair of the Ontario Education Research Panel (OERP), Ms. Green focused her address on how to tailor education to the tech-savvy generation Z. She called for a transference of teaching techniques from “passive learning” to “hard fun”, highlighting that challenging but active learning is crucial to keeping Generation Z engaged in their own learning.
Ms. Green urged educators and parents to view the importance of recognizing generation Z’s unique circumstances, working with the children’s unique skill set and maintaining contemporary teaching techniques. As she explained, “When schools use [technology] to develop connection, communication and higher order thinking, students experience ‘hard fun’ and collaborate, compete, contribute and create as they learn from the past, work in the present and help invent the future.”
Ms. Green ended her inspirational address with a summons to educators and students alike, stating, “Generation Z has the right stuff and with our help, ‘Yes, they can!’ ”.
