November 3rd, 2009
TORONTO, ON – Rubicon author Larry Swartz’s recent article, “Going Graphic: Using Comics and Graphic Novels to Boost the Literacy of English Language Learners” has been featured in the recent publication “Partnerships for Professional Learning: Literacy & Numeracy Initiatives” from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).
The article describes the “Going Graphic” project which was designed to help teacher candidates consider ways of using graphic novels to boost literacy among English Language Learners. Teachers were given a wide variety of graphic texts to use, as well as several strategies to enrich the student understanding of the texts. Overall, the study found that both teachers and students alike were excited about using the graphic texts and that they served to successfully motivate students to read, write and speak as they built their literacy skills.
