LITERACY SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS AT RIVER HEIGHTS PUBLIC SCHOOL
April 1, 2009
CALEDONIA – Rubicon Publishing visited River
Heights Public School today to meet with student winners of a contest sponsored
by Rubicon in October 2008.
At a Toronto Raptors event this past October, River Heights
Public School was chosen from among 250 schools to receive a complete library
of Rubicon books including the award-winning series BOLDPRINT, BOLDPRINT Kids,
The 10 and Timeline. After using the books for four months, 11 students,
ranging from grade 3 to 6, volunteered to discuss the books.
Grade 5 student Caitlyn Carbone exclaimed, “I love these
books because the writing and the pictures blend with each other and the
information rocks!”
Jacqueline Baquest, a Grade 7/8 teacher at River Heights
Public School had the opportunity to use The 10 series in her classroom and
added, “They look like magazines. Students are learning the curriculum and they
barely even know it!”.
Rubicon’s learning group has published many award-winning
resources designed to improve literacy skills and engage young readers. Kid
appeal is one of Rubicon’s main strengths. When Thalia Schuch, a grade 4
student, was asked whether she would like her teacher to use the books as
textbooks, she enthusiastically replied, “Yes, yes, yes, yes!”
