The Art and Science of Joyful Reading: The Five Pillars in Practice
Speakers: Gina Marion & Dianne Riehl
Time: 2:45–4:00pm Thursday, February 19 and 2:45–4:00pm Friday, February 20
Location: Provincial North

Educators across Canada are being called to implement structured literacy practices rooted in the Science of Reading. But in the midst of a much-needed return to foundational skills, many are asking: what about the joy?

In this session, we’ll explore how the five pillars of structured literacy can be delivered in ways that are rigorous and joyful, systematic, and student-centred. We’ll highlight strategies that celebrate student identity, support language and culture, and help all children see themselves as readers. Grounded in equity, belonging, and high expectations, we’ll share ways to ensure no learner is left behind while building a love of reading that lasts.

Participants will:

  • Deepen their understanding of the five pillars and how they work together
  • Explore how joy and belonging can live inside structured literacy K–6 classrooms
  • Gain practical ideas to strengthen both foundational skill-building and authentic reading engagement

Rethinking Play: How Play Lowers Aggression and Anxiety While Building Resilience in Children

Research consistently shows that play is essential for healthy learning and development—yet, for the first time in history, an entire generation is growing up without a play-based childhood. The effects of this shift are profound. Children are struggling emotionally and socially, and educators are feeling the strain as never before. Supporting children’s emotional health and learning has never been more urgent.

Join us as we dive into the fascinating science behind play—uncovering its extraordinary benefits for children’s development. Don’t miss this powerful workshop with Hannah, where you’ll gain fresh insights into the psychology of play and discover practical ways to help children learn, grow, and become their best selves.
