  • Reaching All Students by Focusing on Assets and Not Deficits
    T5.26 Thursday, April 30: 3:30 pm–4:45 pm
In this session, we will look at how more thoughtful consideration of questions posed to students in mathematics classrooms can go a long way to building student success. It is not about making things easier, but making things meaningful and encouraging diverse viewpoints. We will explore questions in Grades K–8 in a number of mathematical domains.
  • Building Richer Conversations in the Math Classroom
    F2.01: Friday, May 1: 10:15 am–11:30 am Featured Session
Students benefit enormously from instruction where conversations about mathematics are prominent. But to have rich conversations, you need to ask rich questions. We will talk about what rich questions look like in a classroom and contrast them to the kinds

  • Get the Facts about Fluency
    F3.13 Friday, May 1: 12:30 pm–1:45 pm
The Ontario Curriculum calls for a balanced approach to math emphasizing a solid grounding in core skills alongside a deeper conceptual understanding. But how do we achieve fluency without resorting to the timed tests and rote memorization of the past? This session we will challenge the traditional view of math fluency as simply speed and skill. Mathematically fluent students notice patterns and structures of numbers and select tools with intention. We'll explore key pillars of fluency and learn practical, classroom-ready strategies to help your students become accurate and flexible math learners . You'll leave with concrete routines, games, and teaching techniques that empower your students to reason — not just recall.
